Tamil Nadu has a long Anglican and wider Protestant mission history, going back to the Lutheran-led Tranquebar Mission of 1706 and the later work of Anglican mission societies such as the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) and the Church Missionary Society (CMS) through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In 1947, most Anglican congregations in the region joined the newly formed Church of South India (CSI), a union of Anglican, Methodist, and Reformed traditions.
